It soon became clear that Count Dooku intended to strip knowledge from the tomb of Ulic Qel-Droma, where the Jedi's spirit could provide clues to the whereabouts of the ancient Dark Reaper superweapon. During the war's first months in 22 BBY, Separatist forces overran the Republic defenders, claiming the barren planet for unknown reasons. Prior to the Clone Wars, the Republic set up a small supply base and listening post on Rhen Var. After an offworlder murdered him, Ulic received a hero's burial inside an ornate stone tomb. The fallen Jedi Ulic Qel-Droma fled to Rhen Var in 3986 BBY, finding some measure of consolation in the snowy wastes as he struggled to redeem his spirit for his part in The Great Sith War. Located in the Thanium Worlds, Rhen Var has traditionally been overlooked for colonization due to its bitter climate. Temples with open courtyards and the lighthouses and docks found at ice-locked harbors attest to a temperate past, though no one can remember when the climate was anything other than subzero.
